Law enforcement agencies throughout New York State are intensifying efforts to combat drunk driving during the Fourth of July holiday and the extended weekend. In Rochester, N.Y., police are among those taking extra measures to ensure public safety.

Starting on Wednesday and running through Sunday, July 7th, the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign will be in full force. During this time, motorists should anticipate an increased presence of law enforcement officials and DWI checkpoints on roadways.

Monroe County STOP-DWI Coordinator Lindsay Tomidy revealed that in the previous four Independence Day weekends, Monroe County roadways saw 308 people getting injured and four individuals losing their lives due to motor vehicle accidents, with a majority of these mishaps being a result of impaired driving. Tomidy emphasized that every life lost is an irreplaceable loss.

During last year’s Fourth of July STOP-DWI campaign, the state police issued approximately 13,000 tickets. Over the holiday weekend, they arrested 193 individuals for DWI and investigated 158 personal injury crashes and five fatalities.
