At approximately 7:30 a.m., police fatally shot and killed George Clyde Manning III in the vicinity of NW Vivion Road and NW Waukomis Drive. He was 43 years old.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), officers spotted the suspect walking with a handgun during their search. In response, the officers fired at the suspect, resulting in his death at the scene.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) has advised residents to steer clear of the scene as the investigation is still underway. This incident is a result of a series of events that began on Thursday night.
The chain of events began with a tragic shooting that took place at a car wash situated at the intersection of NW Vivion Road and NW High Drive in Riverside. The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m.
During a news conference held by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office on Friday morning, it was clarified that there is no connection between the suspect, Manning, and the victim who tragically lost their life at the car wash. It was further revealed that the motive behind the incident was an apparent intention to steal the victim’s car. This led to the suspect shooting the victim and subsequently taking possession of the vehicle.
After stealing the victim’s vehicle, the suspect proceeded to drive to NW 50th Street in unincorporated Platte County.
According to the sheriff’s office, a boy and a woman were shot at a residence in the 4400 block of NW 50th Street. Tragically, the boy lost his life, while the woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
According to Capt. Shanks, there were two individuals involved in the incident. Unfortunately, one of them was a young person who has passed away. The other individual is an adult female who sustained significant physical injuries. She has been taken to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment for her injuries.
According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect reportedly abducted a 5-year-old girl from the residence and quickly left the vicinity. Authorities have reason to believe that the kidnapped child is Manning’s daughter, while the injured woman is believed to be the mother of the girl.
It is unclear if there is a connection between Manning and the boy who was tragically killed, according to their statement.
An Amber alert was issued for the girl shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Friday, but it was canceled over four hours later when she was found safe. Thankfully, the girl has been reunited with her family members.
Around 5 a.m. this morning, the female child, who had been the subject of an Amber Alert, was safely released to a family member of the suspect, according to Capt. Shanks. Thankfully, she was found unharmed.
Capt. Jeffrey Shanks from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that amidst the ongoing chaos, they are currently handling three or four distinct crime scenes.
Furthermore, the KCK Police have reported that Manning is suspected of committing a separate string of felonies in KCK during the night.
According to Capt. Shanks, the suspect may have been involved in other criminal activities before returning to Missouri.
According to the KCKPD, an aggravated assault took place outside a bar on North 13th Street around midnight. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. Witnesses provided reports that aligned with Manning’s description.
Witnesses stated that the suspect had escaped on foot, and within a few minutes, KCKPD received a report of a carjacking in the vicinity of North 11th and Rowland Avenue. The suspect involved in the carjacking matched Manning’s description, and the car was discovered wrecked shortly thereafter.
Around 6 a.m., a 911 call was made reporting the theft of an unoccupied car outside a convenience store on Quindaro Boulevard. The suspect in the theft matched Manning’s description, and this incident occurred less than two hours before Manning’s tragic death.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, it was the officers from the Kansas City Police Department and the members of the Homeland Security Investigations Unit who discharged their firearms.
The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is still ongoing, with MSHP taking the lead. Additionally, the Riverside Police Department and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office will continue their investigations into the events leading up to the shootings and abduction that occurred in the early morning.
