Iredell County, N.C. — Scammers are targeting drivers with text messages, pretending to collect fake fines for express lanes on Interstate 77 in the Charlotte area, according to deputies.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office shared on Facebook that many people have reported receiving texts from “NCQUICKPASSTOLLSERVICES.COM.” These messages urge recipients to click a link and provide personal information to avoid substantial fines.

It’s a scam. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority never notifies express lane users of fines via text message. The FBI warned about this scam in April. Truman Kain, a security researcher, noted that scammers often request a small amount, like $50, to seem legitimate. They’re also ready to answer any questions you might have.

Kain advises that with scammers becoming more inventive, it’s crucial to pause when you receive a text urging you to take action, like paying a bill or clicking a link. If something seems off, it likely is.

“Attackers want you to act quickly without thinking,” Kain explained. “So, when you receive a message with a sense of urgency, take a moment to consider it. Is this even relevant to me? If I’m not using toll roads, it’s definitely not relevant.”
