The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported that a single-vehicle accident on I-69 northwest of Waterloo resulted in the deaths of two individuals on Friday afternoon.
At around 1:00 p.m., the TrafficWise website of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced a collision on I-69, located north of the U.S. 6 exit.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported that an incident occurred where a 2020 Jeep Wrangler, traveling in a northerly direction on I-69, veered off the road and entered the grassy median for an unknown cause.
Dennis Corolla, a 55-year-old driver, lost control of his vehicle while trying to get back onto the road. This caused the Jeep to fishtail, roll over an “unknown number of times,” and collide with a cable barrier. The vehicle eventually came to a stop on its side.
Janice Walthall, a 62-year-old front seat passenger, was ejected from the vehicle due to the crash. Despite the efforts of passersby and medical professionals, both Walthall and the driver, Corolla, were declared dead at the scene.
According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Corolla and Walthall hailed from New Albany, Indiana.
As of 1:00 p.m., INDOT informed that all lanes in both directions were obstructed. However, by 4:30 p.m., the interstate had fully reopened to traffic.
