A Cairo man has been detained and is facing vehicular homicide charges in Dale County, Alabama.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) contacted investigators from the Grady County Sheriff’s Office after a Cairo man was identified as the suspect in a hit-and-run incident that killed bicycling Troy Williams.
Tony Adkins, 48, was arrested on Friday, April 11, after being tracked to Thomasville, Georgia. Officers from the Thomasville Police Department detained Adkins without incident and took him to the Grady County Detention Center, where he is being held pending extradition to Alabama.
According to authorities, after the tragic crash, Adkins fled the scene and returned to Grady County, where he parked the tractor-trailer suspected of being involved in the event in a rural section of the county.
Grady County officers informed law enforcement allies in Alabama after identifying the vehicle, causing ABI and Dale County Sheriff’s Office agents to fly to Cairo to continue the investigation.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has confiscated a tractor-trailer believed to be connected in the ongoing investigation.
