The First Alert Weather Team is on Storm Alert for Sunday as a powerful storm system moves through the middle of the country toward the East Coast, posing a threat of strong to severe storms.
Gusty south winds throughout the day. Despite the cloud cover, Sunday’s temperatures will rise to the low to mid-70s. This will also boost humidity and instability in the lead-up to storms.
The Storm Prediction Center has classified all of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, as well as the majority of the East Coast, as having a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for strong to severe thunderstorms.
Storms with destructive winds and hail, as well as an isolated tornado, will be the primary concern. The tornado hazard will be concentrated south of the D.C. metro, in places such as central and south Virginia, and into the Carolinas.
The heaviest rain and heavy storms will occur around midday around the Interstate 81 corridor and between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. along Interstate 95 and the Washington Metro.
