The First Alert Weather Team is currently on STORM ALERT Sunday for a powerful storm system that has already proven deadly in the Deep South and Midwest. The DMV region has started to experience the impacts of this storm.

As of 7:00 p.m., closures are currently in effect in the following areas.

Stafford, Virginia

Route 218 stays shut down between Deacon Road/Cool Springs Road and Town and Country Drive because of a tree and utility lines blocking the road. Drivers are redirected to Potomac Avenue to go around the closed section.

Montgomery County

A fallen tree and wires have caused the closure of River Road (MD190) near Newbridge Road in Montgomery County. Drivers should anticipate major delays and consider taking alternative routes. Furthermore, a fallen pole has resulted in the closure of Comus Road at Shiloh Church Road.

River Road has been closed off between Newbridge Drive and Persimmon Tree Road as a result of a fallen tree and scattered debris on the road. An adult was injured in a vehicle that collided with the debris and has been taken to the hospital for treatment of priority two trauma. Currently, several lanes are still obstructed due to the incident.

Washington, D.C.

In Washington, D.C., strong winds have caused multiple instances of trees and power lines falling down. One particular incident involved a tree hitting a vehicle in the 2800 block of 44th Street NW.

Prince George’s County

Drivers in Prince George’s County should be cautious while traveling on Southern Avenue northbound at MD-5/Branch Avenue as there are downed wires in the area.
