A 28-year-old man wanted for murder in Georgia was arrested in Baldwin County on Sunday after reportedly committing assault and robbery on Interstate 65, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, May 18, the department assisted in a car pursuit that began in Conecuh County, Alabama, involving a wanted murder suspect from Georgia who had already fired bullets at pursuing cops.
Baldwin County deputies were able to spike the vehicle’s tires, putting an end to the chase. The suspect then fled the truck and attempted to carjack an 18-wheeler, hitting the driver several times in the head and face with a revolver. A passenger in the 18-wheeler fired several bullets at the suspect, who hopped off and raced into the woods.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT squad was activated due to the subject’s warrant and his possession of a revolver, which he had shot at pursuing deputies. After an almost 6-hour search, the suspect, Mike Thomas, was apprehended about 5:45 Monday morning with the help of ALEA troopers and an air unit, the Alabama Department of Corrections tracking dogs, and a number of other agencies. Thomas had a gunshot wound to the leg, which was believed to have occurred during the attempted carjacking.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will be assuming the case due to crimes spanning several counties.
This is a shining example of how agency cooperation and teamwork leads to a successful outcome. We thank all of the involved agencies and the patience of the public during this prolonged event.
