Texas Man Sentenced for ATM Theft from First State Bank in LeRoy, MN
Markell Deshawn Kinney, 22, of Houston, Texas, faces felony charges of theft, receiving stolen property, property damage, and escape.
The Mower County Sheriff’s Office responded to an ATM alarm at First State Bank in LeRoy around 3:20 a.m. on Jan. 11 and discovered that a silver pickup truck was involved in the theft.
Camera footage shows two men breaking apart the ATM’s outer casing and connecting the cash machine to a truck with a chain. According to the allegations, a third individual then drives forward and uproots the ATM.
A responding deputy located the suspect vehicle and began to follow it as it headed south from LeRoy into Iowa. The suspect car overturned as it negotiated a curve on a dirt road near the Minnesota-Iowa border, according to the complaint.
The deputy briefly saw Kinney departing the truck but lost sight of him in the darkness.
He was later caught by police in Stacyville, Iowa, roughly 20 miles southwest of LeRoy.
According to court documents, Kinney pled guilty to stealing, property damage, and flight charges in March in return for having the receiving stolen property allegation dismissed.
Kinney received a two-year suspended jail sentence on Thursday.
The court paperwork shows that the ATM is worth more than $35,000. The court paperwork fails to specify the amount of stolen money or provide a description of the other two suspects.
