Two Texas siblings who were on vacation in Mexico City were discovered deceased in their rented apartment on Tuesday, according to Mexican police and their family.
According to their mother’s account to Telemundo, the victims of the incident were Laura Morales, aged 37, and Hugo Iván Morales, aged 35, both from El Paso, Texas. Their mother had traveled to Mexico City on Wednesday to personally identify her children’s bodies.
On Tuesday, authorities revealed that officers from Mexico City’s Office of Citizen Safety promptly attended to a report of an unconscious individual in an apartment located in the Centro neighborhood of Cuauhtémoc.
During the investigation, law enforcement officials spoke with a 61-year-old woman who reported that the duo, claiming to be from Texas with “virtual credentials,” had rented an apartment in the building.
After repeatedly knocking on their door to inform them about the necessary repair for a water meter leak, she received no response. Concerned, she made the decision to enter the apartment herself. To her shock, she discovered them both unconscious and immediately dialed the police for assistance.
The deaths are currently under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City. In a statement released on Wednesday, the office stated that they are awaiting the autopsy results in order to determine the cause.
The family member, who is raising funds for their funeral expenses, stated that the siblings passed away as a result of carbon monoxide intoxication.
According to an Airbnb spokesperson, the deaths of the couple are being described as a “terrible tragedy,” and the company is expressing its condolences to their family and friends.
“We are currently focused on providing support to those affected while the authorities conduct their investigation. We are prepared to offer any assistance that may be needed,” the statement expressed.
