UPDATE #1: Authorities have raised the death toll to 15. The suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, served in the U.S. Army from March 2007 to January 2015. During his service, he completed an 11-month deployment to Afghanistan in 2009-2010. After leaving active duty, he served in the Army Reserve until July 2020.

UPDATE #2 (3:12 PM): FBI Houston and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are conducting law enforcement operations near Hugh Road and Crescent Peak Drive in north Houston. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) responded to a devastating incident on the morning of January 1, 2025, at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets. A pickup truck plowed into a crowd of pedestrians, causing numerous fatalities and injuries. The suspected driver was also fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with officers.

At around 3:17 a.m., reports came in about a vehicle striking pedestrians on Bourbon Street. Preliminary findings indicate that 10 people lost their lives at the scene, while approximately 35 others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for medical care. Updates on their conditions have yet to be released.

Following the crash, the suspect exited the vehicle and began shooting at responding officers. Law enforcement returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. Two NOPD officers were injured during the exchange and are currently in stable condition at a local hospital.

The suspect has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas. He was driving a rented Ford pickup truck, and investigators are working to determine how he acquired it. An ISIS flag was discovered inside the vehicle, prompting the FBI to treat this as a possible act of terrorism. The vehicle also contained weapons and a suspected improvised explosive device (IED). Additional IEDs were located in the French Quarter, and FBI bomb technicians are collaborating with local authorities to neutralize any threats.

If you are trying to reach loved ones who might have been in the area, call 311 for assistance. Reserve 911 for urgent emergencies.
