According to a news release by the state patrol, the Aviation Section of the WSP is considered a force multiplier.

WSP is utilizing the aerial platform to lend its support to the statewide Target Zero initiative. The primary objective of Target Zero is to decrease the number of severe injury and fatal accidents on state roads by the year 2030.

The state patrol stated that aerial patrols play a crucial role in supporting their mission by deploying troopers both in the air and on the ground to address hazardous driving behaviors.

Troopers will conduct night missions, using their aerial vantage point to identify and report traffic violations.

The airplanes come equipped with forward-looking infrared cameras and are manned by a team of two troopers.

The patrols have a specific focus on identifying drivers who are aggressive and reckless. They are also able to identify drivers who may be impaired.

“As summer comes to a close, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) is urging drivers to take a moment to make responsible choices that can help prevent life-altering tragedies,” emphasized the state patrol. “By reducing your speed, maintaining a safe following distance, refraining from driving under the influence, and always wearing your seatbelt, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents with long-lasting consequences.”

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) will be conducting additional patrols in Lewis, Cowlitz, Clark, and Skamania counties. These patrols will take place until Sunday, August 18th.

Troopers will prioritize the enforcement of dangerous driving behaviors, such as speeding, racing, and impaired driving.
