Record-breaking amounts of snow have been observed in the southern United States this week, and the cold weather is expected to persist in certain areas of southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia, Big Bend, and Panhandle Florida.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning, stating that the combination of low temperatures and wind chill could pose a risk of hypothermia for individuals who remain outdoors for an extended period of time.

What To Know

The NWS issued a warning about wind chills as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit in the affected areas.

Alabama

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory on Thursday morning for Coffee, Dale, Henry, Geneva, and Houston counties. This advisory will be effective from 8 p.m. Eastern Time/7 p.m. Central Time on Thursday evening until 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Friday.

Georgia

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory on Thursday morning for Quitman, Clay, Randolph, Terrell, Dougherty, Lee, Worth, Turner, Early, Miller, Baker, Mitchell, Seminole, Decatur, and Grady counties. This advisory will be in effect from 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Thursday evening to 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Friday.

Florida

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory on Thursday morning for several counties, including Walton, Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Franklin, Gadsden, Leon, Liberty, and Wakulla. This advisory will be in effect from 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Thursday evening until 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Friday.

What Is A Cold Weather Advisory?

The NWS issues a Cold Weather Advisory when there are or are expected to be seasonably cold air temperatures or wind chill values.

What People Are Saying

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a cautionary statement on Thursday, advising individuals to be careful while venturing outdoors. It is recommended to wear suitable clothing, including a hat and gloves, to protect oneself from the cold. Moreover, it is important to ensure the safety of pets by keeping them indoors as much as possible. For outdoor animals, providing them with a warm, dry shelter, along with food and unfrozen water, is essential.

To ensure the safety of your older loved ones and neighbors during extreme weather conditions, it is important to stay vigilant. The weather service recommends regularly checking on them to make sure they are doing well. Additionally, it is crucial to practice fire safety measures, such as using portable heaters correctly and refraining from using generators or grills inside your home. By following these precautions, you can help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.

What Happens Next

According to the National Weather Service Tallahassee, Florida office, temperatures in areas of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida affected by the Cold Weather Advisory will increase above freezing by Friday midmorning, as informed to Newsweek on Thursday.

According to the Tallahassee office, residents can expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s on Friday. However, they can look forward to warmer weather by the end of the weekend, with highs reaching the upper 50s.
