Former President Donald Trump has made a remarkable return to the Oval Office after a standout performance in the 2024 presidential election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. According to KXAN, in Texas—long a conservative stronghold—Trump’s lead was both commanding and historic, amassing nearly 6.4 million votes, the highest ever for any presidential candidate in the state. This was a significant increase, surpassing his 2020 vote tally by more than half a million.
Harris, in contrast, saw a dip in support compared to the Democratic turnout in 2020, earning just over 4.8 million votes. This was about 425,000 votes fewer than what President Joe Biden had garnered during the previous election. Trump triumphed in 242 out of Texas’ 254 counties, while Harris claimed the remaining 12. MSN notes that this marks a sharp contrast to 2020, when Biden had won 22 counties.
The changing political landscape in Texas saw Trump flip Tarrant and Williamson counties, which had previously been held by Biden. Suburban areas in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including Parker, Denton, and Collin counties, also contributed to Trump’s margin, with each county delivering a Republican win of over 50,000 votes. While Harris managed to hold strong in urban centers, her margins shrank significantly from the 2020 election, especially in Travis County, where the difference dropped from 275,000 votes in 2020 to 228,000 in 2024.
A notable shift to the right was evident across Texas, with 233 counties moving toward Trump and only 21 swinging leftward, according to KXAN. Border counties like Maverick, Webb, Starr, Dimmit, and El Paso saw a shift of over 20 points toward the Republican side. On the flip side, Loving County shifted toward Harris by 7.8 points, and Kaufman County, a rapidly growing area, moved slightly to the left by 6.1 points.
Trump’s statewide margin of victory was more than 1.5 million votes, a significant increase from the 631,000 votes in 2020. This margin, representing a 13.68 percentage point lead, became the largest presidential margin of victory in Texas since 2012. The 2024 election in Texas, with its clear turn toward the Republican side, marks a decisive victory for Trump and highlights a significant political shift in one of the nation’s largest states.
