According to the annual major discipline report, Union City Police Officer Edward Romero was suspended for 12 days in 2024 due to his violation of the department’s extended sick leave policy.
“On November 29, 2023, an officer underwent a convalescence check due to an extended sick leave. The check was conducted following the officer’s failure to inform the Chief’s Office on three different occasions, which was a violation of the departmental Extended Sick Policy,” describes the incident.
During the convalescence check, the officer was not present at his designated location. As a result, P.O. Romero received a 12-Day Suspension.
The Union City PD did not report any other significant incidents last year. However, Police Sgt. Ruben Rodriguez faced disciplinary action in January. He had filed a false report about being assaulted in August, as HCV first reported.
Starting from June 2020, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has made it mandatory for all law enforcement agencies to publish their annual major discipline reports online by January 31st each year. This move ensures that the records are readily accessible to the public.
Submitting to the AG’s office is still primarily done through an online portal, and it seems that the state’s annual database has not yet been updated with the most recent major discipline reports from each department.
