Authorities in Western New York have discovered a significant amount of illegal substances, cash, and guns after conducting an extensive investigation into drug trafficking. The recovered items include fentanyl, cocaine, and other drugs. This discovery highlights the ongoing issue of illegal drug dealing in the region.

During a news conference in Buffalo where officials announced recent drug-related arrests, Erie County Sheriff John Garcia posed a question: “What can we do to stop this?” He went on to emphasize the need to tighten our borders at a national level.

Garcia pointed out that despite warnings, people still consume dangerous drugs like heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, and other synthetic opioids. These drugs are not produced domestically and are instead brought in from other countries, making them even more risky.

Multiple agencies have conducted an investigation which has led to new charges against two men from Western New York. It is in light of this development that the aforementioned comments have been made.

Authorities apprehended Dewayne Vass, a 42-year-old individual, following a thorough search of both his residences. As per prosecutors, Vass was halted on July 12, 2024, right after he exited a residence located on Moselle Street in Buffalo. Upon searching him, they discovered cocaine and fentanyl tucked away in his pocket.

Investigators conducted a search of an apartment on Moselle later that day and reportedly discovered further incriminating evidence. The recovered items include a significant amount of fentanyl and cocaine, as well as scales, cutting tools, packing materials, and a sum of cash.

Authorities conducted a search of Vass’ second-known residence on Sunshine Drive in Getzville several hours later. During the search, a loaded handgun was discovered in a shoebox in the basement. Additionally, investigators found more scales, packaging materials, cutting equipment, and cash inside the home. It was also revealed that two juveniles resided in the home and had access to the illegal weapon.

The following morning, Vass faced arraignment on various charges, including Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.

On Saturday, Jariel Cobb Jr., aged 20 and from Buffalo, was also brought before the court as a second defendant.

According to prosecutors, Cobb resided in the upper apartment on Moselle Street, which was searched during the investigation. Despite being questioned, he refused to cooperate and withheld his true identity.

According to investigators, the apartment was in a state of disarray with evidence of three dogs who had been left without access to food or water, resulting in them urinating and defecating throughout the apartment. The authorities have since handed over the dogs to Buffalo Animal Control.

Garcia acknowledged the gravity of the situation regarding the influx of illegal drugs in Western New York, stating that there is much work to be done. However, he emphasized the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to fight against this issue. He stressed that this is not just a matter of professional duty, but also a matter of forming strong partnerships and safeguarding the welfare of the public.
