A more active weather pattern will arrive in Missouri late this week, increasing the danger of severe thunderstorms from Thursday to early Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the worst storms are likely Thursday afternoon and evening, April 17, and may last until early Friday, April 18. Forecast models identify huge hail and damaging winds as the greatest concerns. Parts of northern and eastern Missouri, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Columbia, Kirksville, and Hannibal, have a 15-29% chance of severe weather, with some locations seeing up to 30%.
Thursday’s threat is focused on northwestern and north-central Missouri, while Friday’s risk shifts southeast to towns such as Jefferson City, Mexico, and Quincy, Illinois. The NWS advises individuals who travel or engage in outdoor activities to regularly monitor advisories and prepare for sudden weather changes.
