Pennsylvania is about to experience some turbulent weather in the middle of the week. A cold front is expected to sweep through on Wednesday, bringing with it heavy rain, strong winds of up to 40 mph, and the possibility of thunderstorms. As we move into Wednesday night and Thursday, temperatures will plummet, causing the rain to turn into snow and potentially leading to accumulations in some areas.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Pittsburgh forecasts that storms will commence on Wednesday afternoon, carrying a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. The main concerns include damaging wind gusts and heavy rain in localized areas. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 30 to 40 mph until Thursday, posing hazardous conditions for travelers, particularly on major roadways such as I-376 and I-79.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 30s by late Wednesday night, causing the rain to transition into a wintry mix. Thursday morning is likely to bring snow, with a 70% chance of accumulation. Although the exact snowfall totals are uncertain, drivers should be prepared for slick roads and reduced visibility during the morning commute.

Looking ahead: Five-Day Forecast

• Wednesday: Storms, heavy rain, high near 63°F. Wind gusts up to 40 mph.

• Thursday: Snow likely, high 37°F. Windy.

• Friday: Partly sunny, chance of afternoon rain, high 44°F.

• Saturday: Mostly sunny, high 43°F.

• Sunday: Sunny, cool, high 38°F.

It is important for residents to take precautions during inclement weather. This includes securing any outdoor items, driving with caution, and staying informed about any changes in conditions.
