Authorities in Brazil have arrested a woman for allegedly poisoning Easter eggs and sending them to her ex-boyfriend’s family.
According to the New York Post, authorities accuse Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, 35, of buying Easter treats from a supermarket while disguised. People said that the incident occurred on April 16. Barbosa allegedly spiked the eggs before sending them to her ex’s new partner, Mirian Lira. She reportedly shared the chocolates with her children. Her seven-year-old son, Luis Silva, fell violently ill after swallowing the eggs, and emergency services took him to Imperatriz City Hospital. According to The Standard, Luis died within hours.
Mirian and her 13-year-old daughter, Evelyn Fernanda, are both in critical condition after eating the chocolate and are ‘intubated in intensive care.’
According to the Standard, the eggs arrived with a note reading, “With love to Mirian Lira, Happy Easter.” Lira reportedly enjoyed the chocolates with her family before getting an anonymous phone call verifying the Easter eggs had arrived. Investigators are analyzing the chocolate, and an autopsy is expected to reveal Luis’s cause of death as poisoning.
CCTV Appears To Show Barbosa Purchasing The Easter Eggs In Disguise
Imperatriz Online released CCTV footage from behind the shop counter. It appears that Barbosa is purchasing the eggs while sporting a black wig and sunglasses. According to a translated story from the site, Barbosa sent the eggs following a previous failed plot in which she allegedly attempted to offer Lira chocolates during a ‘tasting session’ at work.
According to the Daily Mail, investigators discovered receipts for the eggs, and Barbosa’s ex suspects her involvement. Police apprehended Barbosa on a bus leaving a hotel in Imperatriz for her house in Santa Inês. The publication claims that the hotel is in the same city as Lira and her family. It is also 200 miles from Santa Inês.
Barbosa apparently confirmed to authorities that she bought the Easter eggs, but she denied poisoning them. According to MaurÃcio Martins, a security official, the crime was “motivated by revenge and jealousy.” He allegedly said in a statement, “There are several indications that clearly point to this woman being the perpetrator of the crime.”
