In a distressing case in Texas, a 38-year-old Oklahoma woman identified as L. Breuer has admitted to violently killing her ex-boyfriend with the help of her 34-year-old sister, J. Cometsevah, bringing an end to a case that horrified both Texas and Oklahoma officials with its overwhelming ferocity. Breuer pled guilty to murder on Monday for the deadly stabbing of her 44-year-old estranged partner, D. Peeler, who was discovered dead in April 2023 at a Texas apartment complex.
Breuer agreed to a 35-year prison sentence as part of a plea agreement accepted by the judge just before her trial began. Her sister, Cometsevah, is still facing accusations of murder and tampering with evidence stemming from the same attack. Authorities stated that Cometsevah had a pending settlement, but they have not disclosed any specifics or the court date. Prosecutors believe the sisters planned to kill Peeler. Breuer stabbed Peeler more than 50 times, leaving the knife embedded in his neck—a heinous act that her sister reportedly helped conceal by removing and destroying the murder weapon and other incriminating evidence.
Peeler’s body was located inside the apartment complex, resting on a deflated air mattress with stab wounds to the torso and neck. Breuer’s arrest affidavit contained unsettling details: according to a jail informant, Breuer confessed to police that her sister Cometsevah assisted in removing the knife from Peeler’s neck, as well as his phone and various blood-soaked objects, and throwing them into a garbage. “The facts of this case were brutal,” Breuer’s defense attorney, B. Cantrel, stated. “He was stabbed 52 times. “My heart breaks for this family. I’m glad the case is over because my client stood up and accepted responsibility.
Breuer had previously allegedly assaulted Peeler. Prosecutors cited an October 2022 incident in which she reportedly struck Peeler with a car key. The case did not result in any charges, yet it exposed a problematic and turbulent relationship between the two. The District Attorney’s Office underlined that the investigation encountered various challenges early on, but excellent departmental teamwork and follow-up interviews aided in Breuer’s confession and conviction.
“Initially, this case presented several challenges,” prosecutors R. Strother and D. Widmann stated. “Our excellent investigation resulted in Ms. Breuer pleading guilty.” With this ultimate conviction, we obtained a significant jail term and a waiver of appeal and provided Mr. Peeler’s family with some closure without the complications of a trial.” Peeler’s family highlighted the terrible pain they have endured since his death in emotive victim impact statements read in court on Monday. One of his sisters discussed her brother’s dying moments. “I wonder how alone, betrayed, and scared he must have felt that day,” she told me. “I’m curious how many of the 52 stabs he felt… “There are no words to describe viewing your brother’s casket.”
While Breuer will now serve three and a half decades in prison, her sister’s legal situation is undetermined. Peeler’s loved ones may feel that justice is unfinished, but Monday’s court appearance was an essential step toward healing after a heartbreaking loss.
