NYSUT Passes Legislation to Regulate School Temperatures

The crisis in the classroom is finally getting attention in Albany. Recently, the New York State United Teachers union declared that a new state legislation has passed both chambers of the legislature. According to the legislation, there will be a maximum temperature imposed in school buildings and indoor facilities to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the students.

Last month, we covered the NYSUT union and lawmaker-led campaign aimed at raising awareness about the challenges of extreme heat in schools, which involved setting up a sauna for lawmakers to experience and take a quiz. The campaign supporters also displayed signs depicting classrooms, including those in the Schenectady and Shenendehowa school districts, where temperatures had reached up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
