Is New York turning into California with all the recent earthquakes? The latest one hit Poughkeepsie and was felt over 100 miles away.

Earthquakes in New York

New York State has experienced over 550 earthquakes. The first recorded quake struck the New York City area on December 18, 1737, with a magnitude of 5.2. This is one of the two significant quakes to hit the city.

The largest earthquake in New York State history occurred on September 5, 1944. A 5.9 magnitude quake struck near the New York-Canadian border, causing damage in Massena and Cornwall, Ontario.

Western New York experienced its strongest quake on August 12, 1929, with a magnitude of 5.2, centered near the town of Attica.

The Utica/Rome area has also felt several tremors over the years. One hit Barneveld in 2015 and another struck Prospect in 2013, both with magnitudes under 2. Port Leyden experienced a 3.5 magnitude quake in 1980.

New Jersey Quakes

New Jersey has recently been a hot spot for earthquakes. The activity began near the end of April in Gladstone with a 2.9 magnitude quake on Saturday, April 27. Another 2.6 magnitude quake hit on May 1.

Califon experienced three quakes in one day on June 17, the strongest being 1.9 magnitude. There were two more quakes the day before.

Since May 30, there have been 16 earthquakes in the same area.

Latest New York Quake

The latest earthquake hit Crown Heights, New York in Poughkeepsie just after 3 AM on Wednesday, June 26. This quake measured 2.1 on the Richter Scale.
