Kansas will soon join the majority of states by enacting a Good Samaritan law to protect individuals in life-threatening situations, who may also be under the influence. This law will come into effect in a matter of days, leaving only one state without such protection.

In May, the Good Samaritan Bill was signed into law by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly. This bill aims to safeguard individuals who provide or seek medical assistance for someone experiencing a substance abuse-related medical emergency.

Governor Kelly achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by passing a law that decriminalized the usage of fentanyl test strips aimed at reducing overdose deaths. The same legislation also increased the criminal consequences for individuals involved in the manufacturing or distribution of the drug.

Good Samaritan laws have been in place in Missouri since 1988, while the Kansas bill is expected to become law on Monday, July 1st.
