This has prompted a recall of the products and people are advised not to sell, serve, or consume them. The recall has been issued after numerous reports of people getting sick across 24 states. 48 individuals have fallen ill from the products, with 27 requiring hospitalization. Authorities are currently investigating one death. In addition to New York, 23 other states – including AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IN, IA, KY, MD, MN, MO, MT, NV, NJ, NC, ND, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, and TN – have reported cases of the illness.
What Is Muscimol?
Muscimol, a chemical present in certain mushrooms, is a key component of these products. As per the National Library of Medicine, muscimol can be found in these products.
A natural component of amanita mushrooms, this compound is highly toxic. It acts as a powerful central nervous system depressant and is believed to be the primary cause of the mushroom’s neurological effects when ingested.
