A popular condiment that had been distributed to stores throughout the country is being recalled due to its potential to cause a severe and potentially fatal infection.

On July 12, AB World Foods US, Inc. released a recall notice for Al’Fez Natural Tahini due to the risk of salmonella contamination. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration shared the notice, stating that the recall is voluntary and the company has stopped distribution while investigations are ongoing.

Starting on May 26, 2023, the products in question were sold nationwide in 5.6-ounce glass jars with a Best Before date of “2024 JL 11” or later and the UPC code 711464506778. The recall, as per the FDA, applies only to the codes mentioned on the back of the jar.

“The specific codes being recalled are: Lot Numbers ‘3031’, ‘3080’, ‘3270’, ‘3297’ with corresponding BEST BEFORE: ‘2024 JL 31’; ‘2024 SE 09’; ‘2025 MR 27’; ‘2025 AL 04’.”

According to the FDA website, salmonella has the potential to cause severe and possibly fatal infections in vulnerable individuals, including young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Common symptoms of a salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. However, in rare cases, more severe illnesses such as arterial infections and endocarditis may occur.

If you have bought the product that has been recalled, it is advisable to discontinue its use immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a complete refund. As of July 12, there have been no reported cases of illnesses linked to the recall.

To get more details and view images of the item, head over to the recall alert located on the website of the Food and Drug Administration at  fda.gov.
