Alabamians vent frustration over driving across state lines for a shot at major Mega-Millions payout

DOTHAN, Ala. — Many Alabamians are crossing state lines with dreams of starting the new year as billionaires.

Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to $1.15 billion, marking it as the fifth largest in the game’s history.

For a shot at this enormous prize, Alabama residents must travel to neighboring states to purchase a $2 ticket.

“We shouldn’t have to; the state of Alabama should have it situated,” said Tony Davis Sr., a ticket buyer from Dothan. “We are bringing all this money from Alabama to Florida. Why shouldn’t we be able to play in our own state each week?”

These trips are necessary because Alabama continues to fail in passing gaming legislation.

Senator Greg Albritton (R-Atmore) and Representative Sam Jones (D-Mobile), who sponsored the gaming bill during the last legislative session, plan to revisit the issue in 2025.

The jackpot has soared after no winning ticket was sold on Christmas Eve. The next drawing is set for Friday at 10:00 p.m.
