PHOENIX — The Arizona Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for all large-breed dogs weighing 50 pounds or more.

This is a great chance to welcome a loving, loyal companion into your home while helping to ease overcrowding at the Valley’s AHS shelters, according to a news release.

As the state’s largest animal rescue agency, AHS continues to face capacity issues, with large-breed dogs often staying in shelters longer than smaller dogs. Currently, AHS has over thirty large-breed dogs available for adoption, including a dozen that have been at the shelter for over a month.

Recently, AHS rescued a dozen dogs from a hoarding situation. Among them, Ernie, a tan and black Sharpei mix, and Fester, a beige Sharpei mix, were treated at the shelter’s trauma hospital and are now available for adoption.

Both dogs have been waiting for permanent homes for nearly two months, AHS reported.

This year, AHS has responded to over 10,000 requests for animal assistance from Valley residents and encourages those who can adopt to consider giving a dog a forever home.
