Authorities launch investigation after residents express gratitude to local drug lord for Christmas gifts

Mexican authorities have launched an investigation after a town in Michoacán publicly thanked Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), for Christmas gifts provided to local children.

A sign displayed at a Christmas fair in Coalcomán read: “The children of Coalcomán thank Mr. Nemesio Oseguera and his sons, 2, 3, and Delta 1, for their noble gesture. Thank you for your gifts.” The message was also broadcast over a loudspeaker, raising questions about the involvement or awareness of local officials in the event.

President Claudia Sheinbaum strongly condemned the act, stating, “A criminal group cannot hold a public event to promote the acceptance of violence.” Federal prosecutors are investigating potential ties between Coalcomán’s mayor and the CJNG, as well as who authorized the sign.

Michoacán is a stronghold for the Jalisco cartel, known for its violent tactics, including roadside bombs and drone attacks on rivals. Despite this, the cartel has also sought local support by distributing gifts, food, and even organizing public events, often using these gestures to mask extortion and violence in the region.

The investigation highlights the complex relationship between organized crime and local governance in areas where cartels exert significant control, sometimes even diverting municipal funds to their operations.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Mexican authorities in addressing cartel influence while maintaining public order.
