On Thursday, the Franciscan Health Indianapolis Center for Women and Children celebrated the inauguration of the 126th Baby Box in Indiana and the 234th in the United States with a special blessing ceremony.

Around 1 p.m., attendees congregated at 8111 S. Emerson Ave. to hear from representatives of both Franciscan Health and Safe Haven Baby Box about the vital roles they play in the community.

According to Greg Williamson, we should acknowledge and appreciate the bravery of young women who prioritize the well-being of their infants and children. He believes that it’s a cause for celebration that there is a safe and reliable option available for mothers who want the best for their babies. “Thank God there is a place I can do it,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of Baby Boxes.

Firehouses and hospitals across the nation have installed Safe Haven Baby Boxes that provide a safe and anonymous way for mothers to surrender their babies. These boxes ensure that the newborns receive proper care while being matched with a loving family.

As the box was unlocked, Father Vincent Onunkwo was present to offer prayers and bless it with holy water.

Additional presenters at the event were Jesse Gitros, who serves as the assistant to Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Box. Also in attendance were Lori Price, President and CEO of Franciscan Health Central Indiana, and Molly Grollimund from He Knows Your Name.

Once the box was blessed and unlocked, Gitros would declare, “Indianapolis and its surrounding areas now have access to this box. It guarantees anonymity, non-judgment, and no finger-pointing.”
