U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Texas seized nearly 48 pounds of cocaine from a vehicle on Tuesday, intercepting a drug smuggling attempt with a street value of over $639,000.
On Tuesday, CBP officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge encountered a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu coming from Mexico and submitted it for secondary inspection with non-intrusive equipment and a canine. A physical examination discovered 20 packages of alleged cocaine hidden within the vehicle.
The narcotics weighed 47.93 pounds (21.74 kg) and had an estimated street value of $639,938.
“This drug seizure is a direct result of our officers vigilance and unwavering commitment to protecting our communities,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo Port of Entry. “Their dedication plays a vital role in keeping dangerous substances off our streets and ensuring public safety.”
CBP officers seized both the drugs and the car. The driver was apprehended by the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is conducting the criminal investigation.
