The Texas Department of Public Safety and Governor Greg Abbott have issued a reminder to drivers about the importance of following the Move Over-Slow Down Law when passing any emergency or work vehicle stopped on the side of the road.

When driving past an emergency vehicle or utility work vehicle with its emergency lights flashing, drivers are required to move over to another lane, if possible, and reduce their speed by 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.

Under the Texas Penal Code, a first offense can result in a fine of up to $1,250. If the violation causes property damage, the fine increases by $500. If the violation leads to bodily injury, it becomes a Class B misdemeanor with a fine of up to $2,000. Those responsible for serious injuries may face up to $4,000 in fines and potential jail time.
