Fetterman says Trump case in New York was politically motivated, calls for pardon on 'The View'

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., shared on Thursday’s episode of The View that he believes the cases against Hunter Biden and President-elect Donald Trump are “politically motivated” and that both individuals deserve pardons.

“It’s undeniable that the case against Hunter Biden was politically motivated. But it’s also true that Trump’s trial in New York was politically driven as well. In both situations, I think a pardon is appropriate,” Fetterman stated.

He expressed concern about the damage these cases have inflicted on public trust. “America’s confidence in these institutions has been shaken. We can’t allow them to be weaponized against political opponents. It’s clear both trials were politically motivated and used as weapons,” he continued.

President Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter, on Sunday ahead of his mid-December sentencing.

During the discussion, co-host Joy Behar raised the issue of Jan. 6 rioters, suggesting the incoming Trump administration might use a similar rationale to defend pardons for them.

Fetterman addressed the point, saying, “I’m focused on the New York trial. Some Democrats were gleeful, labeling Trump a convicted felon. But as a party that advocates for criminal justice reform and second chances, we need to be consistent. Both trials—Hunter Biden’s and Trump’s—were clearly politically motivated. These charges wouldn’t have been pursued unless one side saw an opportunity to weaponize them.”

The conversation also touched on the defense of President Biden’s decision to pardon Hunter. Co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro argued that the indictment only happened because of Hunter’s last name. Hostin had previously suggested Biden pardon his son, a position she defended after the fact.

Meanwhile, co-host Whoopi Goldberg countered critics by claiming that Biden’s decision was influenced by shifting circumstances.
