A man who was imprisoned at the Cook County Jail has passed away at the age of 32 due to a medical emergency that he suffered while in custody.

It was around 1 p.m. on Friday when the incident occurred.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office reported that Ahmad Abed, a resident of Bridgeview, experienced a medical emergency during his stay in the Residential Treatment Unit.

Abed received immediate medical attention from the staff who performed lifesaving measures on him. However, despite their efforts, he was declared deceased at 2:25 p.m., according to the deputies.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is yet to determine the cause and manner of his death pending an autopsy.

As part of protocol, an independent investigation into Abed’s death will be carried out by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force.

As soon as we receive more information, we will provide you with further updates on this story. Stay tuned for more details.
