On Monday night, all lanes of traffic on Interstate 65 were blocked due to a SWAT situation in Indianapolis.
According to the traffic map of the Indiana Department of Transportation at 9:51 p.m., a “traffic hazard” caused the closure of all lanes on I-65 southbound near mile marker 101. The hazard was reported to be situated between Stop 11 and County Line Roads as per INDOT’s classification.
According to Indiana State Police, a stolen vehicle chase concluded in the area, resulting in a hazardous situation on the roadway. Sergeant John Perrine of the Indiana State Police noted in a post on X that the pursuit ended with the stolen vehicle in a ditch.
According to state police, the individual behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle declined to exit the car, leading to the involvement of a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team. The suspect barricaded themselves inside the vehicle, prompting the call for additional support.
As of the time of writing this article, there were no reported injuries during the incident. To ensure the safety of motorists, state troopers diverted traffic around the road hazard by using Southport Road.
At the scene, police were witnessed taking an individual into custody by FOX59 and CBS4 crews present. The Indiana State Police, however, have yet to confirm if anyone was apprehended during the incident.
Traffic began to move again on I-65 southbound just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with state police still present in the area at 12:40 a.m. The road was fully opened at mile marker 101, bringing some relief to commuters.
