Kansas City police are trying to crack down on unauthorized vehicles on the streets

In an effort to tackle the issue of illegal vehicles driving on Kansas City streets, the Kansas City Police Department is taking action. Specifically, the department is targeting dirt bikes and ATVs whose drivers have been known to flout traffic rules, disregard stoplights, and ignore other regulations governing the road.

During the summer, KCPD has stationed additional units in popular entertainment areas such as the Plaza, Downtown, and Westport to enforce the law and take illegal vehicles off the road. However, despite the added enforcement, people in Downtown have reported that these vehicles are still on the streets.

James Palmer reported that a group of 20-25 guys on ATVs or dirt bikes roll down Main Street every night.

According to those who spoke to KCTV5, illegal vehicles are frequently seen driving on curbs, performing wheelies, and engaging in other hazardous behaviors on the road. These drivers often seek out crowds in an effort to showcase their stunts.

Valentin Collazo believes that attention is what people seek wherever they go. According to him, if they do not receive the desired attention, they tend to leave.

On Sunday afternoon, police officers were stationed at intersections where illegal sideshows had taken place in the past. While two businesses declined to speak on camera, they did mention that the presence of law enforcement has had a positive impact. However, despite this, illegal vehicles can still be seen on the streets every day, which is a sentiment that is shared by many individuals in the area.

Palmer noted that the use of illegal vehicles has seen a rise in frequency. He believes that this is due to the drivers considering it as a form of protest against the police.

According to a source who spoke to KCTV5, while some people may find the nightly activity appealing, it is not appropriate to have it taking place on city streets where it can potentially cause harm and disrupt the everyday lives of others.

Collazo expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating that although it is illegal, it can be entertaining for some. However, he believes that it is not the right thing to do.

Palmer acknowledged that parents who aim to have their children asleep by 9pm and are easily awakened may find the situation concerning.
