As Chelsea Lombardozzi was driving down Highway P around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, her attention was drawn to a truck in her rearview mirror.

According to Lombardozzi, he observed the driver repeatedly veering into the adjacent lane, seemingly on purpose, as if he was trying to avoid a pothole or debris. Lombardozzi witnessed this behavior a few times before he encountered a silver truck. Suddenly, he heard a horn honking, followed by a loud crash.

Without hesitation, she immediately pulled her vehicle to the side of the road and promptly dialed 911 for assistance.

The man and the boy successfully exited the silver truck and crossed the highway without any harm. However, the bystanders soon realized that the driver of the white truck was still inside.

Chelsea was left in disbelief by the events that unfolded next.

Lombardozzi recalled a remarkable incident where a man suddenly emerged and forcefully tried to pry open the truck door. With great determination, he continued his efforts until he succeeded in opening it. However, what followed was a moment of panic as he urgently called for a seatbelt cutter. It was a situation that caught everyone off guard, as not many people carry such a tool with them. Nevertheless, this courageous individual managed to tear the seatbelt out and successfully rescued the man, pulling him to safety across the street.

The fire department had not yet arrived when all of this took place.

According to Wentzville Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Michael Scott, they were informed by dispatchers en route that everyone had managed to escape, but they only discovered the selfless act later on.

“It requires a considerable amount of courage to approach a vehicle engulfed in flames. With 80 to 100 pounds of gear on our backs, it’s a whole different story to approach it in civilian clothing. So, that always makes a significant difference,” Scott expressed.

The local hero has received a message from both the fire department and the community.

Asst. Chief Scott expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by individuals who selflessly provided assistance to others, even though they were unfamiliar with the recipients. “We definitely want to recognize you for your efforts and for taking the time to go out and help your fellow man,” he emphasized.

Lombardozzi firmly believes that he deserves recognition for his efforts.

Lombardozzi expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the tremendous impact of the person’s actions. He emphasized the selfless sacrifice made for a complete stranger, recognizing the immense courage and bravery displayed.

If you are the kind-hearted person who performed this act of kindness, or if you happen to know who it was, please get in touch with the Wentzville Fire Protection District at 636-332-9869 or Wentzville City Hall at 636-327-5101.

The crash occurred outside the city limits but falls within the jurisdiction of the Wentzville Fire Protection District.
