Louisiana Launches SUN Bucks Program to Aid Families

This Article Includes

  • 1 Louisiana Launches SUN Bucks Program to Aid Families
  • 2 Expansion of Benefits in Phase 2
  • 3 Future Opportunities in Phase 3

Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has unveiled the SUN Bucks initiative, aiming to assist families in providing meals for their children during the summer break. Funded by the USDA, this program will grant a one-time $120 payment per eligible child, deposited onto their SNAP EBT card by June 21. Targeting initially 300,000 children aged 5 to 18 who received SNAP benefits in the previous school year, the program aims to alleviate food insecurity during school closures.

Expansion of Benefits in Phase 2

Phase 2 of the SUN Bucks program will extend benefits to additional eligible children automatically. This includes those receiving Medicaid, FITAP, or KCSP benefits, as well as those qualifying for free or reduced-price school meals. In late July, DCFS will issue new EBT cards loaded with SUN Bucks to these families, enabling them to purchase SNAP-eligible food at participating stores. Families are reminded to use these benefits within 122 days to avoid expiration.

Future Opportunities in Phase 3

Following Phases 1 and 2, Phase 3 will introduce an application period for children who were not automatically included in earlier phases. DCFS aims to ensure comprehensive access to the SUN Bucks program for all eligible children in Louisiana, emphasizing its commitment to supporting families throughout the state during these challenging times.
