The Mid-Atlantic is in for a soggy stretch through the end of the week, with waves of thunderstorms bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall and wet travel conditions in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and adjacent states.

According to the National Weather Service’s Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, rainfall totals are likely to range between 0.25 and 0.75 inches per day through Friday, with isolated thunderstorms capable of delivering more than an inch in some regions. The largest odds of extensive rain and storms will be on Wednesday and Thursday.

Roads may turn slick during nighttime commutes, particularly in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and central Virginia. While the risk of river flooding is now minimal, minor creeks and low-lying regions may face temporary runoff concerns if downpours continue. Streamflows remained typical for most of the region as of Tuesday morning, with the exception of southern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, where they were moving higher.

Drivers are advised to slow down in heavy rain, and householders should keep their phones charged and storm drains free. With humidity rising and storms occurring on a daily basis, this pattern may be similar to the wet periods witnessed in late June 2021.

More showers are forecast through Friday, with fresh advisories coming midweek.
