According to KCCI Des Moines, the individual who was recovered from Lake Michigan on Tuesday and later passed away was a middle school principal hailing from Iowa.

According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Mark Scholes, a 44-year-old from Oskaloosa, was on a vacation with his family at Ludington State Park when he started having trouble swimming around 1:49 p.m. A bystander called 911 for help.

According to the police, a group of individuals attempted to rescue him by entering the water. Despite their efforts, Scholes had to be retrieved from beneath the water and brought to a raft. He was then taken to the shore, where CPR was administered until the arrival of the first responders.

Police reported that he was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead at 2:50 p.m.
