During a recent press conference, Republican leaders stood alongside families of victims and urged Governor Ned Lamont to put an end to future commutations. The emotional event shed light on the anguish that these families have had to endure due to violent crime, highlighting the very real human toll it takes.

Concerns Over Sentence Reductions

Senator Heather Somers (R-Groton) and Senator John Kissel (R-Enfield) have expressed their apprehension towards the Bureau of Pardons and Parole (BOPP). They believe that BOPP might be exceeding its jurisdiction by lowering sentences and circumventing legislative supervision, which could possibly encroach upon the court’s power.

Nominations Hearing Issues

Lawmakers posed challenging questions to Chairman Carleton Giles and other board members during a recent public hearing on nominations for the BOPP. Victim families also gave testimony and shared the devastating effects of losing their loved ones to violence.

During the research, the team relied on newspaper reports and court documents to gather information for each case. The age of each inmate at the time of their crime was also included in the study. This was done in response to concerns raised by advocates of justice reform who argue that the human brain is not fully developed until age 25. As a result, lengthy or life sentences given for crimes committed under this age should be reconsidered. A particularly revealing testimony was highlighted in the research.
