A tax collector from a New Jersey town is accused of stealing dozens of products from a Wegmans in Pennsylvania while using the self-checkout lane.

Gail Brewi, 60, of Warwick, has been charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property, according to police in Warrington, Pennsylvania.

She was nabbed at the Warrington Wegmans on February 8, according to police.

According to authorities, Brewi had 48 products in her shopping cart valued at $225.98.

According to authorities, she attempted to use the self-checkout queue but was turned away due to having too many products.

Brewi exited to go to another line, but she returned to the self-checkout queue to try again. She was told again that she could not use the self-checkout.

According to police, Brewi scanned and paid for only 19 of the items. She removed the remaining products, worth $159.63, without paying, according to authorities.

She was apprehended at Wegmans and later released after being processed at the Warrington Police Station.

Brewi holds multiple positions for West Amwell Township, including tax collector, affordable housing, and construction.

A call to Brewi’s office in West Amwell seeking comment was put on hold and disconnected. Brewi did not respond to a voicemail left on Thursday.
