City officials have announced that parents in the Big Apple will receive guidance on safe gun storage at home. This comes after a tragic incident where a 14-year-old boy lost his life due to a gun that was found in a bedroom and accidentally fired by his younger cousin.

City officials have confirmed that the education department will be sending a letter to families addressing firearms safety and the legality of guns, spanning across multiple pages.

During a press briefing at City Hall on Thursday, Congressman Dan Goldman from Brooklyn stated that the guidelines he proposed would be applicable to anyone who owns a gun.

A tragic incident occurred in Albany last March when a 3-year-old boy unintentionally shot and injured his 6-year-old brother with a handgun that was not properly secured.

According to Congressman Dan Goldman from Brooklyn, the US Department of Education has sent letters to school principals nationwide, emphasizing the significance of secure storage and urging them to communicate with families about it.

According to him, sharing this information is not mandatory for school principals and administrators.

New federal resources have been made available to families in New York to help combat gun violence in the city.

As we reflect on the issue of gun ownership, Schools Chancellor David Banks shared a personal anecdote about his father who served as a police officer and owned a firearm at home. He recounted how his father responsibly handled the situation and ensured the safety of his family.

“He allowed us to touch the gun as a deliberate effort to eliminate any curiosity we might have had about it,” he explained.

It remains unclear if the city will distribute the gun storage safety form letter from the US Education Department. However, according to Goldman, parents can expect to receive a comprehensive multi-page resource outlining important guidelines.

According to Everytown, an anti-gun rights website, there have been 87 cases of unintentional shootings by children this year alone, which have caused 34 deaths and 55 injuries across the country.

If you’re a gun owner in New York City, it’s important to know that you are required to register for a license in order to legally possess handguns, rifles, or shotguns.

Gun owners in New York State are obligated by law to secure their firearms if they reside with a child under the age of 16, or if they have knowledge that a minor may have access to the weapon. This law requires responsible gun ownership and prioritizes the safety of children by ensuring that firearms are inaccessible to minors.

Tiffany Grant, 35, couldn’t hold back her tears as she spoke to the Post about the tragedy that took her son Jasai’s life. She expressed that Jasai was her world and meant everything to her. The police disclosed the gruesome details of the incident, labeling it as an “accidental” shooting.

As she stood at the memorial for Jasai, outside her mother’s Dean Street home in Crown Heights, she reflected on the young teen’s life. “No one can be perfect, but he was pretty close to it,” she said, with a heavy heart.
