Oregon and California have introduced safety measures ahead of the Fourth of July. Below are the guidelines detailing which fireworks are permitted and prohibited in both states, along with the penalties for non-compliance.

Oregon

  • Legal fireworks: Fountains, flitter sparklers, and ground spinners.
  • Illegal fireworks: Firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman Candles, Aerial shells, missiles and rockets, Silver Salutes, Cherry bombs, and M-80s.
  • Violations: Residents can face fines of up to $2,500 per violation and a civil penalty of up to $500.

Using fireworks that shoot into the air, explode, or behave unpredictably is prohibited. If fireworks you or your child use cause damage, you may be responsible for covering fire suppression costs. Currently, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lake counties have a “high” fire danger level, while Curry County’s danger level is “moderate.”

California

  • Legal fireworks are those that bear the “safe and sane” seal and are used only in designated locations.
  • Illegal fireworks include skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers, sparklers, and other types that explode.
  • Violations of fireworks regulations can result in fines of up to $50,000 and up to one year of imprisonment.

In Siskiyou County, fireworks are prohibited in unincorporated areas.
