According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a late-March heatwave will hit the western United States early next week, with record-breaking temperatures expected across many states.

The NWS Weather Prediction Center predicts that a massive high-pressure system will form over the region, delivering unseasonably warm weather. The Southwest, including California, Arizona, and Nevada, may see highs in the upper 80s and 90s, with some locales possibly exceeding 100 degrees for the first time this year. Temperatures in parts of the Northwest, including Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, are also anticipated to be above average, reaching the low 70s.

Temperatures are expected to peak on Tuesday, March 25, and Wednesday, March 26, with locations such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix potentially setting new daily highs. Temperatures in northern California and the Pacific Northwest, including Portland and Seattle, could be substantially above seasonal averages.

Residents should take precautions against heat-related illnesses, stay hydrated, and avoid outside activity during high heat hours. Authorities have also warned of an increased risk of fire due to the dry and warm conditions.

This unprecedented early-spring heat episode highlights ongoing climate changes that contribute to excessive temperatures. Meteorologists expect more adjustments as they refine their projections.
