The arrival of spring last week signals that brighter and warmer days are ahead.

A winter weather advisory for ice and snow in Carbon and Monroe counties has been issued from 1 to 10 a.m. Monday. The advisory includes the towns of Stroudsburg and Jim Thorpe.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts “mixed precipitation.” Total snow accumulations can reach one inch, with ice accumulations at one-tenth of an inch.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute,” adds the weather service. “Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.”

A second alert was issued Sunday afternoon for Delaware and Sullivan counties in New York, as well as northern Wayne, southern Wayne, and Pike counties in Pennsylvania, for the hours of 2 to 10 a.m. Monday. Plan for slick road conditions, according to the notice, noting that the hazardous conditions may affect the Monday morning commute.

According to the NWS, the following will occur nationally over the next few days:

  • Snow is forecast to develop across the upper Midwest to the upper Great Lakes today as severe weather and heavy rain threat emerge across the Mid-South
  • More wet weather is expected for the Pacific Northwest through Monday before a drying trend sets in.
  • A fire weather threat will increase Sunday across large portions of the Central to the Southern Plains.

Temperatures in central Pennsylvania are expected to reach 50 degrees under bright skies on Sunday, before clouding up with light rain after midnight. Showers should finish by mid-morning, and temperatures are expected to drop to 40 degrees, eliminating the possibility of ice. Monday’s high is expected to exceed 60 degrees.

There is a minor probability of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Otherwise, it appears to be a rather peaceful week, with most days sunny. It will be cold Tuesday through Thursday, but milder by the end of the week, with highs of 61 on Friday and 65 on Saturday, according to the NWS.
