Authorities announced on New Year’s Day that they had apprehended a man believed to be responsible for a fatal shooting in Phoenix on New Year’s Eve.

The Phoenix Police Department has reported that 22-year-old Jose Gonzales-Hernandez was taken into custody on Wednesday and placed in jail. He is facing a charge of second-degree murder.

According to jail records in Maricopa County, his bail was set at $1 million.

Gonzales-Hernandez is suspected of shooting Edi Ruiz, 32, at his apartment near Cave Creek and Greenway roads in north Phoenix.

When officers arrived at Ruiz’s apartment at 15430 N. 25th St. at 5 p.m. Tuesday, they discovered him with a gunshot wound. On the scene, they pronounced the person dead.
