A man who stole an Ohio State Highway Patrol car after assaulting an officer was shot and killed by Pennsylvania State Police troopers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Beaver County on Friday.
Pennsylvania State Police have not identified the dead suspect. An unspecified number of Pennsylvania troopers have been placed on administrative duties as the incident is investigated.
A state police representative did not immediately respond to a request for updated information on Saturday.
State police said they were contacted just after 6 p.m. Friday that an Ohio state trooper had been assaulted, and the suspect had taken the trooper’s marked cruiser and was driving east on the Turnpike.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol notified TribLive news partner WTAE that a trooper from the Hiram post responded to a rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike about 5:30 p.m. A man wandering along the shoulder of the road assaulted the trooper, who attempted to deploy a Taser but was unsuccessful.
Pennsylvania troopers encountered the vehicle near the Ohio border, and a pursuit ensued.
According to state police, troopers used “legal intervention” to end the pursuit. WTAE footage showed an Ohio patrol cruiser on its roof at mile marker 15 in North Sewickley Township.
When they approached the vehicle, an altercation erupted, prompting troopers to use deadly force, state police said.
Pennsylvania State Police did not disclose any other injuries. The Ohio trooper received treatment for minor injuries.
The incident is being investigated by the state police major case team, and the findings will be forwarded to the Beaver County District Attorney’s office for evaluation, state police said.
