Overview of Violent and Property Crimes by State

This Article Includes

  • 1 Overview of Violent and Property Crimes by State
  • 2 Factors Influencing Crime Rates
  • 3 Tennessee’s Ranking
  • 4 The Rest of the List

A recent study by US News examined violent and property crime rates across all 50 states. By analyzing this data, they assessed how each state ensures public safety.

From this analysis, US News created a safety ranking for each state. While some states performed well, securing spots in the top 10 or even the top half of the list, others did not fare as well.

Factors Influencing Crime Rates

According to the FBI, several factors contribute to crime levels, including population density, economic conditions, climate, and family cohesiveness.

Tennessee’s Ranking

Though Tennessee placed 27th overall in US News’s “Best States” ranking, it didn’t perform well in terms of crime. The state’s violent crime rate stands at 622 per 100,000 people, with a property crime rate of 2,302 per 100,000. These figures place Tennessee at number 6 on the list of the 10 most dangerous states in the nation.

The Rest of the List

As for the other states among the ten most dangerous, we find:

#10 Missouri

#9 California

#8 Oregon

#7 Alaska

#6 Tennessee

#5 Washington

#4 Arkansas

#3 Colorado

#2 Louisiana

#1 New Mexico

Interestingly enough, Washington ranks as the #5 most dangerous while simultaneously ranking #8 in the Best States Overall.
