Texas Legislators Propose Banning Adult Toys from Being Sold at Grocery Stores

New Texas legislation aims to restrict the sale of adult toys in grocery stores across the state.

Did you know that stores like Walmart and Target actually sell adult toys? While they may not be as explicit as what you would find in a dedicated adult store, I can assure you that they are still reputable and reasonably priced.

In preparation for the 2025 legislative session, Hickland has proposed H.B. 1549, a bill that aims to impose restrictions on the sale of obscene devices. This legislation would impact retailers such as Walmart, Target, CVS, and Walgreens. Hickland is not the only supporter of this bill, as fellow Republican Christin Bentley expressed her endorsement in a post on X.

The sale of adult toys in Texas has faced legal scrutiny and undergone evolving interpretations over the years. In the past, Texas enforced strict obscenity laws that categorized adult toys as prohibited items if they were marketed or sold for sexual gratification. However, these laws have been contested and modified due to constitutional considerations surrounding freedom of expression and personal liberties.

A new Texas lawmaker is considering imposing restrictions on the sale of adult toys at major retailers.

If two-thirds of Texas House members approve the law, it will take effect immediately. However, if it is approved by a lesser margin, it will become law on September 1, 2025.

Until 2008, the sale of more than six adult toys or devices in Texas was prohibited if they were marketed primarily for sexual stimulation or gratification. This law received criticism for being overly restrictive and outdated, with violators facing potential criminal charges.
