On Tuesday, Attorney General Marty Jackley shared that a couple from Texas has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $86,000. They were found guilty of six different charges that involved stealing or attempting to steal from another individual.
The court decided to hand over probationary sentences to both defendants, and no prison time was served as the sentence was suspended.
Richard Spry, an 82-year-old resident of League City, Texas, has been convicted of two felony counts of Grand Theft and one felony count of Conspiracy to Commit Grand Theft. As a result, he has been sentenced to five years in prison, fined $44,000, and placed on probation for four years.
Susan Spry, a 75-year-old resident of League City, Texas, has been convicted of multiple felony counts, including Grand Theft and Conspiracy to Commit Grand Theft, as well as one misdemeanor count of Theft by Exploitation. As a result, she has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined $42,000. Additionally, she has been placed on probation for four years.
As per the South Dakota Office of the Attorney General, the two individuals were found guilty of taking money or property from an elderly or disabled adult. The stolen amounts varied from $100,000 to $500,000, and comprised of funds from bank accounts.
During the sentencing on Tuesday, the state urged for a 10-year prison term to be given to every defendant.
According to Attorney General Jackley, the defendants in this case have caused harm to a vulnerable member of our society by violating their financial well-being. He added that the Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation Unit of the Attorney General’s office works tirelessly to safeguard our elderly from individuals like these defendants who take advantage of difficult circumstances.
